Mission:
[MAIN] From The Ashes
Location: Sick Bay
Timeline: Immediately after "Save Me," Part 3
The Bajoran Security crewman limped his way into Sick Bay. He had Heriah's arms around his neck and an arm around her waist helping her remain upright. He was practically dragging the human security crewman behind him.
"Medical emergency," he said. His vision was still blurred and balance was waning. "We need..." and he started swaying.
Koronis, one of the MEd-Comp Pentaptych activated, the Emergency response and began notifying departments. It rushed to the patients who were injured at their door. The bots have an internal speech operating much faster than spoken word and Koronis communicated to its counterparts that Ensigns Hijan and Raj along with Commander Rex were in need of assistance. Eudora was largely meant for childcare but had the holoprojector to make their EMH form.
Heriah was doing her part in keeping them both upright, though her part was minimal at best.
Normally, Crewman Briga would have been working down in the Lower Decks of 109, but today, she was serving part of her annual duty rotation in Main Sickbay's emergency department. Her eyes widened at the pair of Security crewmen and--was it the First Officer?!-- staggering into the lobby, none of whom looked steady on their feet. "I need three wheelchairs in the ED, stat," Eslin said into the comms pickup and moved to assist the human Security crewman, who looked about ready to fall over.
Pollux was a chrome-shaped football with two grabber claws, that flew in with three simple chairs from nearby.
"Lean on me, and we'll have someone look you over," she said as she got the human into a seat and then quickly moved to assist the Trill. Without her weight pulling him off balance, the Bajoran could stand just long enough for Eslin to get the commander seated and then assist the Bajoran to a chair. Eudora was performing scans and applying first aid to the obvious wounds.
The sound of a door hissing open could be heard, and then footsteps. Eslin waved the corpsmen, all with wheelchairs, over. The CMO came with them. The corpsmen began carefully transferring the three banged-up patients into the wheelchairs. Aeyla had powerful anti-grav units, a partner to Koronis for lifting patients, and they maneuvered folks into positions.
Hijan was a new recruit to security, on his second rotation after only four shifts. He had never encountered such a scene in his career. Exhausted after carrying Commander Rex he stammered, "No... No... I'm fine you got to catch that guy, and whoever is ringing that bell, stop it!?!"
He pointed to nowhere in particular and began to fall in that direction, fortunately the nurse directed him into the chair.
"Activate MCI 1 and notify trauma personnel." Delling said, turning around to get a feel for the number of casualties incoming. He'd heard the alert come in with the rest of the Medical senior staff. This was becoming a habit, he noted idly.
MCI 1 activated, the computer replied.
A moment later, a voice spoke from Delling's combadge. Dhuro here. I take it there are three patients. What've we got?
"That is correct, at this time. Stand by for more incoming." Victor looked at the XO, who had uneven pupils and was probably not the best person to ask information of right this moment. "Track their comm badges, find where they came from and ensure there aren't more wounded."
Eslin returned to her console to carry out Dr. Delling's order. "Tracking their combadge signatures now, sir. The security personnel came from--" She looked at Delling, startled. "Doctor, tracking data shows the Security personnel were all the way down in the Garden District, near the docking bays. Commander Rex's last tracked location was at the same area, but I get no current signal from her badge." Eslin looked at Cmdr. Rex and blinked. "Oh, she's not wearing a badge." Eslin tapped and slid her fingertips over the console again. "I'm not picking up any stationary combadge signals from the area these three people came from, sir. All other movements look like normal foot traffic and maybe someone on a motorized cart."
She switched on her comm pickup. "Medical to Garden District Docking Bay. Do you have injured personnel?"
Only static came to her ears. Eslin frowned and tried to filter it out. "Repeat--Medical to Garden District docking bay. Does anyone down there need medical assistance?" Again, static. Eslin glanced at Dr. Delling and shook her head. "Nothing's getting through, sir."
"No medical assistance needed down there," Heriah said shakily. "Comms and sensors are being recal...recali...relocated." She aborted trying to find the right word. "I was...we were...escorting a detainee." She got several waving lights before her eyes. Someone asked her to follow their fingers. "He fought back. Overpowered. Escaped. Ship. Long gone. My head."
Heriah felt someone tear at her pants, exposing her leg. Her kneecap was standing straight up and wiggling about as she tried to straighten her leg.
The door to the ED area slid open again, to admit a red-haired woman with a medscanner. She took in the three injured people and visibly blanched before moving forward. She went to the human crewman. "Hello, Crewman; I'm Dr. MacAran. What's your name?"
The crewman gave her a dazed look. "Parminder. Raj Parminder, Ma'am."
MacAran continued asking a few other questions and ended with, "Excellent, you're in pretty good shape, head-wise. Let me have a look at you. That is a nasty dislocation, Mr. Parminder; I can see you're in a lot of pain. We're going to take you to the back, and I will reduce that right away." She moved the medscanner up and down the crewman's body, cataloguing injuries as she went. She tapped her combadge. "Dr. Dhuro, I've a human male about 25 years of age, with a dislocated right shoulder, multiple contusions, and mild blunt-force head trauma. I'm bringing him to MCI-1 now."
Good; I've been tapping my foot, came the reply. What about the other two?
"Dr. Delling is seeing to Cmdr. Rex. Our third patient is a male Bajoran, looks about 30. His throat is bruised, and his pupils are of unequal size. I've not been able to scan him yet, but I suspect broken ribs, too, and an injury to his left foot. Lt. Auden's Exo-Comps are administering first aid to Mr. Hijan now."
Cmdr. Rex is injured? A fluent Bajoran swear word came across, hastily cut off. Thanks. I'll set up for a joined Trill, a Bajoran, and a human. Anyone else will have to take a number. Dhuro out.
Dr. MacAran nodded at the corpsman who had brought the wheelchair for Crewman Parminder and carefully assisted him into it. "Take him to MCI-1." They exited the lobby and disappeared behind the pair of double doors.
Hijan had gotten an injection of pain inhibitors, but as he kept trying to stand they gave a sedative too. Aeyla gently lowered him into bed, her robotic arms padded for soft handling. Bikram sighed in relief; the caretaker bots were doting well enough. From the edge of the room, and controlling via padd it was Bikram who pulled the strings.
Koronis however was keeping a portion of its memory for a program which could not reconcile with main computers. Reversing the file path lead to a partitioned drive, populated with data from a source which looked similar enough. Even when Bikram tried to open the file or move it to free the space, Koronis declared it Vital Systems and stopped the process. Bikram asked himself, "how in the hell does a robot have secrets"?
"The crewmen," Heriah said as she tried to sit up and reach out, "how are they?" But two hands pressed themselves against her shoulders to push her back down; held her there. Someone was cutting at her undershirt, pulling it away. Gentle hands started massaging her belly. Thumbs were pressing around along her ribcage.
"They're banged up, Ma'am, but they're being seen to," Eslin said to Cmdr. Rex. "Just relax, and let the staff take care of you."
'Oh that feels good. Keep doing that and I may have to ask you out on a date.'
"Keep doing that," Heriah slurred, "and I may have to ask you out on a date."
It was Nurse Breidinger who was feeling around Heriah's ribs. She ignored the Commander's words. "We have at least two bruised ribs, Doctor Delling," she said. "Perhaps one fracture."
Victor's eyes flickered from Heriah to the nurse and back again. The mask cracked for a moment and the man gave a devilish smirk before he controlled himself once more. "Right. Full scan and labs then. We don't want the stress to affect her joining."
'Nah. For once, we are both doing great.'
"No need to worry over that," Heriah said. "We are both going great."
'Like two peas in a pod.'
"Like two peas in a pod."
'More like, I am the pea and you are the pod.'
"Only Rex," she patted her belly before Nurse Breidinger removed it so she could continue, "is the pea and I am the pod."
'Ready to split you open and run amok.'
Heriah's eyes went wide. Her pupils were dilated. Someone was shining a light in her face again. "Don't let the counselor know I said that." She tried to sit up but a stiff hand disallowed her from doing so. "Just patch me up so I can get back to work please."
Victor's snort echoed in the quiet between them. "The sooner you let me do my job, the sooner you can get back to yours."
Heriah huffed as the thought from Rex came to her. She laid still and surrendered herself to the medical team. Her simply stared at the ceiling despite the images were still doubled, misty and swirling. Her right eye was twitching.
"Scans indicate a concussion, doctor," said Nurse Breidinger, "and a slight brain bleed." She felt the broken knee and the ribs could wait. The brain was far more important. She waited on the doctor's orders.
"Lets see the scans then..." he muttered as the scan finished and the screen obediently pulled up the scan. That motion artifact there showed there was a slow bleed but an active one. His brow creased and he dimmed the lights in the bay. The bleeding was in fact adding pressure to her optic nerves. The change in her pupils was getting more apparent and he smiled gently.
"Alright...10cc of Suvorexant and reversal. Let's get all injuries managed at once, we will have about 15 minutes of downtime. " .
Lanis' voice came over Delling's combadge. I'm getting OR 2 prepped for neurosurgery.
"Excellent, lets move." Victor's voice took on a calm that only years of practice in the management of emergencies could give to a man, then he nodded for them to take her to OR 2. 15 minutes was only barely enough time, but it was what they had.
